How To Cope With Stress
Do you need ideas on how to cope with stress? Are there too many deadlines and too many responsibilities coming your way at work recently? Do the bills seem to skyrocket and to keep coming? Are there too many issues you need to settle at home? Well news flash, stress is an inevitable part of life and if you are not careful, it may ultimately destroy your life and the life of those around you. Below are a number of ways on how to cope with stress.
How To Cope With Stress: Take Charge of Your Life
Stress management is all about taking charge of one’s life. That means controlling one’s emotions, thoughts, actions, the environment and the methods on how problems are dealt with. You can never control the situations and the circumstances life throws at you, but you can certainly control how you deal with them and how you carry yourself through such challenges.
Identifying the Stresses In Your Life
The only way to solve a problem is to know, first hand, what the problem is. The same goes with stress. Do you know how to cope with stress if you cannot identify it? You cannot expect to remedy or control it, if you do not know the things, the people, and the situations that make your life stressful. Not all stresses in life are obvious and are easy to identify. There are others needing close scrutiny on your part. Habits and attitudes are perfect examples. Your habits and attitudes may be big contributors to your stress without appearing so because they are a part of who you are. Sometimes, the problem is not from external sources but may actually be coming from you.
Coping With Stress: Identify Your Coping Mechanisms
After identifying what are the causes of your stress, it is imperative that you also identify what your coping mechanisms are. There are healthy ways of coping (e.g. staying positive, talking with family and friends, taking up a hobby, etc.) and there are also unhealthy ones (e.g. smoking, drinking, overeating, etc.). There are instances when the problem is actually not the causes but the methods you employ to handle those causes. Try to cope by adopting healthy and productive activities.
Another Way to Deal With Stress: Saying “No”
It does pay to say “no”. Know your limits. Stressful situations often arise when people go beyond from what they are capable of doing. Taking in more responsibility when you know that your plate is already full is a perfect recipe for disaster.
Take a Break
This is especially true for people who are on the daily grind of work and household responsibilities. Take a few minutes off at regular intervals throughout the day. Stop for at least 15 minutes, close your eyes and just focus on your breathing. Shut out anyone and anything for those few 15 minutes. Take the time to slow down and relax. You will be thankful you did it afterwards.
Use Your Sense Of Humor To Cope With Stress
Always try to look at the brighter side of things. Use your sense of humor to lighten stressful and crazy situations. Smile and have a good laugh. There is no point in stressing yourself especially if things are beyond your control. But you can always decide how you react and how you hold up yourself.
Relieving Stress: Let It All Out
Never bottle up any feelings or emotions. It’s unhealthy. There is nothing wrong with sharing a piece of your mind as long as you say it politely and not in an offensive manner. Speaking and expressing yourself is one of the best ways on how to cope with stress.
